The ideal TikTok video length in 2026 isn't one number — your format sets it. Here are the per-format bands, and when going longer earns more reach than cutting.
Every few months a new “optimal length” number goes around — 21 seconds, 34 seconds, 7 to 15 seconds, under a minute. They’re all real averages. They’re also all useless, for the same reason: they average a 9-second sight gag, a 40-second tutorial, and a 2-minute story into a single figure that describes none of them.
Here’s the direct answer to what you searched: there is no ideal TikTok video length in 2026. There’s an ideal length for a tutorial, a different one for a listicle, a different one for a POV skit — and the number is set by how many beats your idea has, not by the platform. A three-beat idea stretched to 45 seconds and an eight-beat idea crushed into 15 both fail, and they fail in ways that look identical on your analytics.
Length is downstream of format. Get the format right and the length picks itself.
Why platform-wide length advice keeps contradicting itself
Take the two pieces of advice creators hear most. “Short wins — the algorithm rewards completion.” “Long wins — watch time is the real currency.” Both are supported by data. Both are being cited by people looking at different formats.
The completion argument is arithmetically true: duration is the strongest single predictor of whether a short-form video gets finished. Every extra second is another independent chance for a thumb to move, so the ceiling on completion falls as the video grows — before anyone judges the content. That’s why the benchmarks have to be read per length band, which we laid out in Retention Benchmarks by Video Length.
The watch-time argument is also true. Industry analysis of over a million videos found that pieces past 60 seconds earned meaningfully more reach than the 30–60 second band, and TikTok has said outright that finishing a longer video is a strong signal — a heavier one than a like. Total attention is its own currency, and a lower percentage of a bigger number can still be more.
Both are true because they’re answers to different questions. The percentage tells you whether the video worked. The seconds-per-view tell you what it was worth. Neither question has a universal answer, because “the ideal length” is really asking: how long can this specific idea stay interesting?
The three things that actually set your length
Before the format bands, the reasoning behind them. Three constraints decide how long a video can hold, and every format is just a particular combination of them.
1. Beat count. A beat is one unit of new information or one turn in the story — a step, a reveal, an item, a punchline, an objection answered. Most short-form ideas have between two and eight. A video is roughly its beat count times the time each beat needs to land. Fewer beats than your runtime and you’re padding; more beats than your runtime and you’re skimming.
2. Proof requirement. Some claims are self-evident and some need evidence. “This looks satisfying” needs no proof. “This changes how you should price your product” needs a demonstration, a number, or a before-and-after — and evidence takes seconds you can’t skip without turning the claim into an assertion.
3. Payoff distance. How far the viewer has to travel to get the thing they came for. Formats where the payoff is the whole video (satisfying, ASMR, transformation) tolerate almost no runway. Formats where the payoff is a conclusion (story, explainer) can hold much longer, because the viewer is being paid in tension the entire way.
Padding is what happens when runtime exceeds beats × proof. Skimming is the reverse. Both show up on your drop-off curve, in different shapes, which is the diagnostic we’ll get to below.
The per-format bands
These are the working ranges — where each format tends to sit when it’s doing its job, in our library of analyzed videos and in the published benchmark sets. Treat them as starting points to test against, not laws.
- Quick tip / one-beat hack — 7–15s. One claim, one demonstration, done. This is the format most often ruined by length: an eight-second idea padded with an intro, a restatement, and a sign-off reads as filler even when the tip is genuinely good.
- Satisfying, ASMR, and loop content — 8–20s. The payoff is continuous, so runway is dead weight. These live or die on loopability, not on completion.
- POV, skit, and hook-driven comedy — 10–25s. Setup, turn, punchline. Three beats, and the turn has to arrive by roughly the halfway mark or the setup starts reading as the whole video.
- Listicle / curation — 15–40s. Budget 4–7 seconds per item and pick the item count to fit, not the other way around. Five items at five seconds beats ten items at three, because three seconds isn’t long enough for an item to be memorable enough to save.
- Transformation and process — 15–45s. Front-load the end state, then show the work. Length here is set by how many visible stages the transformation actually has.
- Product review — 30–60s. Needs a claim, at least one piece of proof, and one honest limitation. Under 30 seconds it reads as an ad; the limitation is usually the first thing cut and the thing that was carrying the trust.
- Tutorial / how-to — 25–75s. The one format where going too short costs you the most. A tutorial that omits the step where people actually get stuck doesn’t save time, it fails at its job — and gets saved by nobody.
- Explainer with evidence — 45–90s. Claims that need charts, comparisons, or receipts. The proof requirement sets the floor here, and it’s high.
- Story and narrative — 60–150s. The longest band that reliably works, because tension is doing what pacing does elsewhere. It only holds if a question is open the entire time; the second it resolves, the rest is epilogue and the audience leaves.
Notice the spread: the shortest band tops out below where the longest one begins. Any single “optimal length” number is picking one of these and telling everyone else they’re doing it wrong.
When going longer actually earns more
Longer is worth it when the added seconds add beats. That’s the whole test, and it’s stricter than it sounds.
Adding 20 seconds of new information, extra proof, a second example, or a complication in the story raises total watch time and usually raises saves too, because the video became more useful. Adding 20 seconds of intro, recap, restated hook, or a slower delivery of the same content lowers everything at once — the percentage falls and seconds-per-view stays flat, which is the signature of padding.
The check to run on your own back catalog takes two minutes: for each video, multiply length by average retention to get seconds-per-view, then sort by length.
- Longer videos, lower percentage, higher seconds-per-view — going longer is working. Keep pushing that format’s band.
- Longer videos, lower percentage, flat seconds-per-view — you padded. The extra runtime bought nothing.
- Longer videos, lower percentage, lower seconds-per-view — the length is actively costing you. Cut back to the band above.
There’s a second-order effect worth naming: length changes what the ending has to do. In a 10-second video the ending is basically the loop point. Past about 40 seconds, viewers who leave early never reach the moment that earns the save — which makes the closing line load-bearing in a way it simply isn’t in short formats. That’s the mechanic behind earning the save without begging for it, and it gets more valuable the longer you go.
Diagnosing length problems from the drop-off shape
Your curve tells you which mistake you made, if you read the shape instead of the final number.
Steady bleed with no cliff, on a longer video. Classic padding. Information density is too low — the viewer isn’t offended, they’re just not being paid often enough to stay. Cut the runtime to your format’s band before touching anything else.
A cliff in the middle of a short video. Usually skimming. The idea had more beats than the runtime allowed, so a step got compressed into something the viewer couldn’t follow, and they left at the moment they lost the thread. The fix is more time, not less.
A healthy curve that ends 15% early. The video is fine and it’s too long by exactly that much. Whatever is in the last stretch is epilogue. Trim to the last real beat.
A steep first-three-seconds drop regardless of length. Not a length problem at all — that’s an opening problem, and it’s the one place where format bands don’t help you. Faceless formats fall harder here for structural reasons we covered in what carries a video with no face.
Find your own bands in twenty minutes
- Tag your last 25 videos by format, not by topic. Tutorial, listicle, skit, story, transformation — use the labels above.
- Within each format, list length and average retention. Keep formats in separate rows permanently; mixing them recreates the exact averaging problem this post is about.
- Add a seconds-per-view column (length × retention). This is where going longer proves itself or doesn’t.
- Find the length where seconds-per-view peaks within each format. That’s your band’s center — and it will differ from the published ranges, because it’s fitted to your delivery and your audience.
- Test one step outside it. If your tutorials peak at 45 seconds, publish one at 60 with a genuinely new beat, and one at 35 with the weakest beat cut. Not both changes in one video.
- Re-check monthly. Bands drift as your audience shifts from strangers to returning viewers, who tolerate more length.
The output you want isn’t a number to apply everywhere. It’s a short list: my tutorials want 50 seconds, my listicles want 25, my skits want 14 — and the discipline to write to the band you’re in.
